France Transfers Its Fourth Military Site to Senegal

(MENAFN) France has officially transferred control of its fourth military site to Senegal, according to a statement issued by the French Embassy in Dakar.

The handover, which took place on Tuesday, saw the Inter-Armed Transmission Station in Rufisque—situated roughly 25 kilometers southeast of Dakar—transition to Senegalese authorities. This site, operational since 1960, has long served as a vital communications center for the southern Atlantic coastline.

Initially, France established five military installations in Senegal. Prior to this transfer, three bases in Dakar were handed over in March and May.

The final French-controlled base is slated for transfer by the end of July, in keeping with the agreed-upon timeline, the statement confirmed.

In a significant political shift, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye called for the departure of French forces in his New Year’s address on Dec. 31, 2024.

This handover aligns with a broader trend in Africa, as nations such as Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, and Côte d'Ivoire have demanded the withdrawal of French military presence and the return of their bases.
